The Sivananda Rehabilitation Home is a wonderful NGO that I have been working with since early 2007. They are located on a 50 acre campus in Kukatpally, on the outskirts of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, India. This NGO started in 1958 to address the huge leprosy problem in India. They have evolved into a model organization in this area, engaging in the full spectrum of leprosy care, from diagnosis and treatment, to surgical correction of defects, to physical and occupation therapy, and even vocational training. Since 2003, they have been involved in providing antituberculous therapy. More recently, they have started a multifaceted HIV program. They run an orphanage for HIV-infected children, maintain inpatient HIV wards, and have just started a program in prevention of parent-to-child transmission of HIV. Check out this video from Youtube. Then check out their site. Even better, donate! They are a recognized non-profit organization in the US, called the Sivananda Center, your contribution is tax-deductible, and all of it goes to help patients.
